It’s a sad day when a Roomba gets fed up with its daily robot existence and decides to end it all by throwing itself onto a kitchen hotplate. It’s a sad, sad world indeed.
A 44-year-old house owner in Kirchdorf, Austria, was preparing to head out for the evening with his wife and son, but he decided to tidy up a quick mess before they all left. The man turned on the Roomba pictured above and set it on one of the counters in their kitchen to clean up some spilled cereal.
Before leaving, they checked to make sure the robot had completed its clean-up duty and had turned itself off. Austrian firefighter Helmut Kniewasser described what occurred next…
“Somehow it seems to have reactivated itself and made its way along the work surface where it pushed a cooking pot out of the way and basically that was the end of it.
“It pretty quickly started to melt underneath and then stuck to the kitchen hotplate. It then caught fire. By the time we arrived, it was just a pile of ash.
“I don’t know about the allegations of a robot suicide but the homeowner is insistent that the device was switched off – it’s a mystery how it came to be activated and ended up making its way to the hotplate.”
The homeowner was fairly distraught over the whole incident, and is apparently preparing to sue the makers of Roomba for compensation due to smoke damage and because, “the company that makes the robots is selling dangerous devices….”
