A 71-year old Chinese man named Chen Dejun has been drinking fuel for 42 years as a pain reliever. It all started in 1969 when he suffered from a coughing fit and a pain in his chest. His village’s elders suggested he drink kerosene to ease the pain. So he did.
I think they were trying to kill him—or at least see if he would be stupid enough to do it. But I digress.
Amazingly enough, the remedy worked, so he continued on drinking the stuff daily to ease his pains—switching to gasoline later on after kerosene became hard to find. Chen Dejun now estimates that he drinks 3 to 3.5 liters of gasoline every month.
According to doctors, the man is in good health despite signs of emphysema. The gasoline should have killed him they say, but it appears that he has built up an immunity. They also note that the gas may have acted as an anesthetic, but it won’t cure the underlying cause of his pain.
