A Glenfiddich whiskey distilled on July 17, 1937 and bottled on Oct. 24, 2001 was sold on June 16th 2010 at an Edinburgh auction for £25,000 or about $37,000. The whiskey is part of a 61 bottle limited edition that is helping to fuel an investment market in spirits.
“Prices have been fantastic,” Martin Green, the whisky specialist at Bonhams, said while setting up the auction. “Collecting seems to be reaching an all-time high. It’s the alternative investment angle people are looking at.”
The sale falls short of a world record however, which apparently went to a bottle of scotch sold in Glasgow in 2007 for £29,400 or about $43,500.
