Flaviar Is The Subscription Box For Lovers Of Fine Spirits [Review]

There are a lot of subscription box services out there right now. I know this because I’m pretty much addicted to them. That having been said, when Flaviar contacted us about trying their discovery service for fine spirits, I jumped at the chance. As a whisk(e)y lover, the idea of having a flight of curated spirits sent to my door sounded awesome.

The actual experience did not disappoint.

So what is Flaviar exactly? As I mentioned, it’s a subscription service for fine spirits including scotch, bourbon, rum, gin, and more—but there are actually several different options to explore:

Prime Membership (Trial month $18.99, then $24.99 /mo): Every month Flaviar sends Prime Members three curated spirits in 45ml bottles. Members can choose to skip a month, swap for a Tasting Box or select a bottle and get free shipping.

Tasting Boxes (currently $42.99-$69.99): Free and Prime members can buy regularly available Tasting Flights of 5 vials samples with free shipping.

Bottles: Flaviar sells full size bottles at a discount. For example, A bottle of my beloved Lagavulin 16-year old is currently $83.99, which is a pretty good deal in my neck of the woods. They also offer a money-back guarantee on their bottles. So, if you have a membership and can get free shipping, you might be able to save on some of your favorite bottles when compared to your local liquor store.

They also have a pretty cool (and educational) app.

I chose the Whisky Festivity tasting box which currently includes the following five single malts in 45ml vials: Auchentoshan 12 Year Old, The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, Talisker Storm, Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera Reserve.

The 45ml vials provided a solid sample of each whisky and I thoroughly enjoyed comparing and contrasting the differences of each using the included tasting guide. The whisky itself was delicious, but the bottom line is that I appreciated the fact that Flaviar allows you to try out some pricey spirits without having to commit to a full bottle. In my case, the whisky included in the $44.99 Whisky Festivity tasting box would cost around $326 if you bought them all in full-size bottles. The Flaviar subscription / Tasting Boxes certainly aren’t cheap, but it’s definitely an opportunity to broaden your palate. This sort of thing also makes for a great gift.

By the way, the vials made me feel like I was some sort of drunken Frankenstein in his booze lab. What would happen if I mixed these together? Bwahahahaha!

I didn’t do that of course. It would be blasphemy.
