Rather than water down patrons’ beverages with regular ice cubes, Starbucks is testing giving customers the option to have their drink chilled with chunks of frozen coffee (for an extra fee of course).
Although coffee shops often provide free coffee cubes made from leftover joe, Starbucks’ offering arrives pre-made in a bag, which baristas then break up and store in a back-of-house fridge until needed.
It has been said that the chunks can make frappuccinos stronger and a lot smoother, however, it has also been pointed out that they could enhance coffee’s bitterness. Whatever the case, bitterness is likely already part of the equation, as customers will actually have to fork over an extra $.80 if they want them.
The coffee ice is currently being tested at 100 Starbucks locations in St. Louis, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland.
