Starbucks Fined For Adding Hidden Surcharge To Bagged Coffee

Authorities in Massachusetts busted Starbucks for ripping off its customers by adding a hidden $1.50 surcharge on sales of bagged coffee under 1 pound that it didn’t print on receipts or disclose to customers before a purchase was made.

“While Starbucks, and any retailer, is allowed to charge any additional fees it wants on a product, those additional fees have to be clearly and conspicuously disclosed to the consumer before the purchase,” Consumer Affairs chief Barbara Anthony said.

The company was slapped with a $1,575 fine, but that is obviously pocket change, especially since authorities estimate that roughly 75,000 customers paid the fee in Massachusetts alone. Now that they’ve been caught, Starbucks has decided to drop the fee, which they claimed covered extra labor and packaging costs.
