For months, British chef Jamie Oliver has been waging a campaign to protect U.S. consumers from ammonia-treated scrap meat known as “pink slime”, which has been added to 70% of our meat supply, and is used to extend meat products and kill bacteria. It seems his work is having an effect, because McDonald’s recently announced that they stopped using the substance last year (though McDonald’s denies Oliver’s campaign played a role in the decision).

The bottom line is that a certain amount of ammonium hydroxide — an ingredient used in fertilizers, household cleaners and some roll-your-own explosives, is permitted by the USDA, who apparently doesn’t require labels stating that the chemical has been added.

Check out Jamie’s eye-opening and disturbing presentation about pink goo after the jump.

Vancouver restaurateur Dougie Luv, owner of DougieDog Hot Dogs has created a $100 “Dragon Dog” which he claims is the most expensive in the world. The foot-long offers Kobe beef seared in olive and truffle oil, fresh lobster, a secret picante sauce and a bratwurst infused with century-old Louis the 13th cognac – which costs more than $2,000 a bottle.

If you want to try the $100 dog for yourself, your order must be placed 12 hours in advance. Luv claims he has already received 10 reservations.

At first glance, buffalo chicken cupcakes (with hot sauce and blue cheese baked in the cake then topped with a blue cheese buttercream frosting) seems like it would be terrible. However, much like my beloved N.Y. Giants they just might surprise you. Could be a new Super Bowl tradition.
