Starting on July 5th, Taco Bell will take on restaurants like Chipotle with a new offering dubbed ‘Cantina Bell’ that features upscale ingredients like fresh black beans, guacamole, fire-roasted corn salsa, creamy cilantro dressing, cilantro rice, pico de gallo and citrus-and-herb marinated chicken.
Critics have taken note of this Chipotle-esque menu since testing began in select markets back in January. However, the move could be good news to Chipotle fans as Taco Bell’s prices are significantly cheaper.
The Cantina Bell menu will include a Cantina Burrito Bowl and the Cantina Burrito (with veggie, steak or chicken options) priced under $5. As AdAge notes, similar items at Chipotle average around $8. The sides mentioned earlier are priced at $1.49.
A commercial for the menu is available after the break, and it seems pretty clear that they are banking on the creator of the menu, chef Lorena Garcia, to bring credibility to a company that hit it big with cheap meat stuffed inside a Doritos shell.
