With Amazon’s increased interest in brick-and-mortar stores and developing their grocery business, the fact that they just bought the struggling Whole Foods chain for $13.7 billion should come as no surprise. But you’re probably surprised anyway.
John Mackey will stay on as CEO and continue to operate the chain under the Whole Foods brand. However, it’s a safe bet that Amazon Fresh and Prime Now will be integrated into the business. We might even see some of the technology behind Amazon Go down the line.
“This partnership presents an opportunity to maximize value for Whole Foods Market’s shareholders, while at the same time extending our mission and bringing the highest quality, experience, convenience and innovation to our customers,” Mackey said in a statement.
The deal is expected to close sometime in the second half of the year.
