Columbia has a serious Nutella situation on its hands. Since they began offering the spread last month, supplies have been perpetually low – and some are suspecting that student theft is to blame. By comparing the current prices of Nutella 13 oz jars and 11 lb tubs ($4.29 and $64.95 respectively) with the Columbia Spectator’s report of a $5k Nutella loss per week, Buzzfeed determined that 850-950 pounds of Nutella are vanishing PER WEEK.
In order to put things into perspective, that’s “about the same weight of a horse (840 to 1,200 pounds) or seven average-sized couches weekly.” Columbia estimates that if Nutella continues to vanish at its current pace, Nutella consumption will cost $250,000 a year. That’s roughly seven jars per undergrad or annual tuition for four students.
