Tokyo-based beverage company Asahi Soft Drinks unveiled a new vending machine that actually gives people something for free. In addition to its drink dispensing duties, the machine will provide free Wi-Fi within a within a 50m radius, which can be used by anyone, without registration.
After logging in, users will see a home screen which displays information about local stores or sightseeing spots. The service can be used for roughly 30 minutes before the machine cuts you off, although re-connecting is possible. In 2012, Asahi plans to roll out 1,000 machines in five different regions in Japan (Tokyo, Sendai, Chubu, Kinki, and Fukuoka). In the next 5 years, the company hopes to have a total of 10,000 units in operation.
