Move over, Ellen DeGeneres, the internet has a new retweet record holder, and his name is Carter Wilkerson aka the Nugget Boy.
About a month ago, Wilkerson contacted Wendy’s Twitter account to ask how many retweets he would need to get free chicken nuggets for a year. The answer came back as 18 million, and a challenge was born.
The cause earned support from companies like Apple Music, Google, and Microsoft as well as actor Aaron Paul, T-Mobile CEO John Legere, and Ellen DeGeneres herself – with Wilkerson making an appearance on her show on April 18th. The response was so overwhelming that he was given a verified badge, a custom hashtag with emoji and a spot for his tweet in Twitter’s Q1 shareholder letter.
Over the course of the challenge a deal was made that, in addition to a year’s supply of nuggets, Wendy’s would donate $100,000 to The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption when the record was broken. Yesterday, it all came to pass as the company officially announced that Wilkerson now has the most retweeted tweet of all-time – shattering DeGeneres’s previous record of 3.4 million.
The only question remaining is how many nuggets he’ll be allotted each day.
