After a 3-year struggle, an Austrian man named Niko Alm won the right to wear a pasta strainer in his driver’s license photo. His claim was wearing the headgear was required for his religion—”pastafarianism”. He’s also claims to be a member of the “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster”.
Believe it or not, it didn’t make that sh*t up. Pastafarianism is rooted in the US, and it’s basically designed as an satirical atheist movement. Alm was simply trying to make an ironic point.
The request was approved, but not because of religious reasons. The only criterion for these photos is that the whole face be visible. However, authorities did require that Alm obtain a doctor’s certificate stating that he was psychologically fit to drive. That was probably a good idea.
Still, Alm never picked up the license. He’s moved on to bigger and better things—like trying to convince the Austrian government to accept Pastafarianism as an official religion.
