According to the Taipei Times, a female food blogger surnamed “Liu” was fined the equivalent of $7,000 and sentenced to 30 days in prison and two years of probation for claiming that a local restaurant has salty food and cockroaches:

After visiting a Taichung beef noodle restaurant in July 2008, where she had dried noodles and side dishes, Liu wrote that the restaurant served food that was too salty, the place was unsanitary because there were cockroaches and that the owner was a “bully” because he let customers park their cars haphazardly, leading to traffic jams.

Though the High Court found that Liu’s comments were statements of facts, not intentional slander, the judge ruled that she had been to hasty to judge the restaurant after eating only one dish on a single visit. Heath inspectors were also unable to verify her claims.

Liu has since apologized to the restaurant for the review. The owner hopes that the case “would teach her a lesson.”

Thank God we don’t live in Taiwan eh? The prisons would be overrun with Yelp users.
