When I was in high school, our pranks involved trashing hallways and, in one case, setting up all the desks in a classroom on the roof. Compared to that, having a fake lightsaber battle in the lunchroom seems pretty tame—certainly not something that would force you to ban the students from graduation. However, that’s exactly what happened at Westfield High School in Massachusetts.
According to principal Raymond Broderick:
“They very easily could have hit another student they could have started something different, someone could have gotten hurt and it was just a disruptive situation and they understand it’s not acceptable.”
Perhaps things would have gone over better if they used one of these.
A Facebook page has been started in protest and the principal has received written apologies from the boys. Given that (and the media attention), we would hope that the faculty will reconsider before graduation on Friday.
