I don’t really associate high school cafeteria food with “gourmet cuisine,” but the grub’s supposed to be at least somewhat edible and decent looking. Farah Sheikh’s blog, Fed Up, showcases 7,000 lunches from schools through the US, and many of the examples are actually downright gag-inducing.
Farah was researching school dropout rates when she got the idea to start her blog. She noted to NPR that nutrition “has a pretty big impact on student concentration and student performance in school.”
Many schools have downsized the portions they offer to their students, and Farah believes that children should have a say in the quality and size of their meals. “We want to give decision-makers a sense of what it’s like to be a student who isn’t getting the energy they need from their school lunch,” she adds.
